Installation: Eclipse

Installing the Eclipse IDE

Once Java is installed, download Eclipse 3.1 or later from the Eclipse Foundation. Choose the download site closest to your location. The primary United States mirror is located first in the list. Then select the latest 3.1 release available. Finally, select the platform on which you will be running Eclipse from the list provided.

To install Eclipse, simply unpack the ZIP or TGZ file you downloaded. On WindowsXP, this can be done by right clicking the file's icon and choosing "Extract All..." (Figure 1) On earlier Windows operating systems, a utility such as WinZip is required to unpack the downloaded file. (Figure 2)

Unpacking the file results in a folder named eclipse. Inside that folder, you should see the Eclipse executable that will launch the Eclipse IDE. (Figure 3) Eclipse is now ready for use.

Please read the installation instructions provided by Eclipse Foundation on their website for more information.
